Do not judge only by a professor’s enthusiasm or research record. Look for several forms of evidence about both the systems supporting undergraduate education and students’ actual interactions with faculty: syllabi with clear learning goals and assessment methods, class size, office hours or advising, and processes for improving courses. At information sessions or through current students, ask about how professors respond to questions and provide feedback. Official materials may also explain the institution’s teaching policy and how it uses student surveys. No single indicator is conclusive.
