UQ1018

What should I do if I can solve problems in class but perform badly on exams?

Being able to follow examples in class is not always the same as being able to retrieve and apply the method independently under exam conditions. Classify each error as a knowledge gap, method selection problem, calculation mistake, time-management issue, or anxiety, then practise without looking at solutions and under a time limit. Rework mistakes afterward. If the problem continues, show specific answers to the instructor or an academic adviser for targeted feedback.

Key points

  • Practise recalling the material with notes closed and solving unfamiliar or mixed problems within the available time.
  • After an exam, record not only wrong answers but also questions that caused hesitation or consumed too much time.
  • Use mock sessions or available practice questions that resemble the actual exam format.
  • Also check non-study factors such as sleep, pacing, and anxiety.

Things to check

  • Exam formats and the availability of past exams or practice materials vary by course and university, so check the syllabus and official guidance from the instructor or institution.
