Can credits from my original department count after changing departments?

After changing departments, some or all of the credits you earned in your original department may be recognized toward the new department’s graduation requirements. However, recognition can depend on the course content and category, and you may need to retake required or specialized courses that are not accepted.

Key points

  • The range of credits recognized is generally determined by how the courses correspond to the new department’s curriculum.
  • Some credits may remain on your academic record but not count toward the new department’s graduation requirements.
  • If you are considering a change, ask the academic affairs office or equivalent department to review your completed and current coursework.

Things to check

  • Recognition rules and procedures vary by university, faculty or department, academic year, and individual coursework, so check the current official study regulations or consult the relevant academic affairs office.
