UQ2016

What do students actually study in a psychology degree?

A psychology degree combines the scientific study of behaviour and mental processes with research and data analysis. Depending on the course, students may study topics such as biological psychology, cognition, development, social behaviour, personality, mental health, and psychological disorders, alongside research methods, statistics, ethics, and sometimes a dissertation or practical work.

Key points

  • Teaching may include lectures, seminars, laboratory or computer-based studies, essays, reports, presentations, and research projects.
  • Some courses offer optional modules in areas such as counselling, neuroscience, education, health, forensic psychology, or organisational psychology.
  • An undergraduate psychology degree is not automatically professional training to become a psychologist or therapist; further accredited study or supervised training may be required.

Things to check

  • The subjects, practical opportunities, assessment methods, and professional recognition depend on the university, course, country, and degree level, so check the official course information.
