What contract-law concepts should construction management students understand before work placement?

Before work placement, construction management students should understand how contracts are formed and interpreted, the parties’ roles and authority, scope and specifications, payment, variations, time and delay, defects, risk allocation, insurance, indemnities, termination, and dispute resolution. They should also recognise the difference between contractual duties and liability for negligence or breach, and know when to seek advice.

Key points

  • Pay attention to notice requirements, record-keeping, approvals, extensions of time, and procedures for valuing changes.
  • Understand how main contracts, subcontracts, purchase orders, and consultant agreements connect, including the effect of flow-down obligations.
  • Be familiar with key documents such as drawings, specifications, schedules, programmes, warranties, bonds, and practical-completion provisions.

Things to check

  • Terminology, statutory rules, standard-form contracts, and workplace procedures vary by country and project; course materials and employer guidance should be checked.
  • This is general educational information, not legal advice.
