UQ2028

How can I tell whether psychology is the right subject for me?

Psychology may be a good fit if you are curious about human behaviour and willing to study it scientifically, including research methods, data analysis, writing and ethical issues. Review the modules and assessment methods on courses you are considering, try an introductory course or lecture, and reflect on whether you enjoy evaluating evidence as well as discussing psychological ideas.

Key points

  • Check whether you are comfortable with statistics, research design, critical reading and academic writing, not only topics about mental health.
  • Consider whether you can engage thoughtfully with sensitive subjects and competing explanations of behaviour.
  • Compare the course content with your interests, and speak with current students or a careers adviser if possible.

Things to check

  • Psychology courses differ in their balance of biological, social, cognitive, clinical and applied topics, as well as their workload and assessment methods; check official course information.
  • Studying psychology does not by itself qualify someone to practise as a psychologist or therapist; professional requirements depend on the country and role.
